Former captain and coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Sunday Oliseh has hit back at a Nigerian journalist who compared the Super Eagles team of 1980 with that of 1994, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
The Super Eagles team of 1980 won Nigeria her first ever AFCON title with the likes of Emmanuel Okala, Segun Odegbami, Adokiye Amasiemaka and the duo of late Muda Lawal and Christian Chukwu among others.
Oliseh who was a key member of the 1994 team that also won the Africa Cup of Nations, and qualified Nigeria for their first ever appearance at the world cup that same year rates the team better than any other the country has produced.
While reacting to a question from Nigerian journalist Ken Ochonogor on X formerly known as Twitter, Oliseh said no team comes close to 1994 in response to a question on the 1980 squad beating the team of 1994.
“I still believe the 1980 team could have beaten the 1994 team.
Okala vs Rufai
Chukwu vs Keshi
Muda vs Oliseh
Odegbami vs Finidi
Adokiye vs. Amuneke
If only they had a Yekini!
Sunny, someday, I’ll take you on this”, Ochonogor wrote tagging Oliseh to get his response and he didn’t hold back when he did.
“Well you can easily rate the teams and players by what they achieved both at club side and National team levels. With all due respect, no team collectively or individually till date has come close to what the 1994 team players achieved for club and country. sorry!!”, he responded.
