Lille’s new signing Chuba Akpom has opened up on his international future, which saw him switch his allegiance from England to Nigeria in 2019, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Akpom joined the Ligue 1 side on a loan deal till the end of the season, but there is also an option of making the deal permanent if he meets certain conditions at the end of the season.
An England youth international at several levels, Akpom who started his career at Arsenal was asked if he will honour a call to the Super Eagles if new coach Eric Chelle include him in the squad for the World Cup Qualifiers in March.
“I try to give a 100 percent, I’ve been waiting since 2019, I switched allegiances a long time ago. But if it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, I’ll just keep working hard”, he told German based Nigerian journalist Oma Akatugba before going further to explain his absence, which he said he has no clue about.
“I don’t have a clue why I have not been invited to the Super Eagles, maybe because there are a lot of top strikers of course. But I think that for the nation to progress, it needs to be on merit. The players that are performing well need to be selected.
