Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi has heaped praises on Per Mertesacker, crediting the German World Cup winner as the man that taught him the art of defending while he was at Arsenal.
The West Brom defender spent two years at Arsenal (2013-2015), the same time experienced defender, Metersacker was still pulling the famous Gunners jersey. Ajayi stated that he learnt a whole lot tactically and he developed technically at the club.
The 26 year-old said “Per Mertesacker took a lot of time to teach me the art of defending and gave me some wisdom that he picked along the way. I’m really grateful for that.
“I did hope to one day break into the first team but everybody’s path is different. I’m grateful for the time there, I always look back with fond memories”.
Ajayi noted that the things he learnt there has helped him throughout his career, as he has played for a host of other clubs since departing North London.
The Crayford-born defending went on to join Cardiff City after leaving Arsenal. He played for AFC Wimbledon, Crewr Alexandria, Rotherham United before joining West Bromwich Albion in 2019.
Ajayi received his first call up to the Super Eagles in August 2018 for 2019 African Cup of Nations Qualifiers which he described it as a “dream” call up.
He made his debut against Seychelles in the 2019 Nation cup qualifiers, coming on for an injured Chidozie Awaziem in the 73rd minute of the tie.
