The captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria John Obi Mikel will likely end his international exile when the camp of the Super Eagles open for training ahead of the start of Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, Owngoalnigeria.com reports.

Mikel has not played for the Eagles since the World Cup in Russia and even a move to English Championship side Middlesbrough where he has captained them to back to back win he is yet to return to the national team.

Without the influential captain the team has won all of their games after the World Cup and sealed qualification for the AFCON with a game to spare, leading to talks that Mikel’s time with the Eagles is up.

Speaking to Owngoalnigeria.com, a member of his management team confirmed that the 31 year old is still keen on representing Nigeria at least one last time, possibly at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

” Base on his last discussion with coach Gernot Rohr he is still interested in playing for Nigeria and yes he want to go to the AFCON, otherwise he would have told the coach when they talked before the last round of international games”, he told Owngoalnigeria.com.

” Unless something changes in the next few weeks. Mikel will play for Nigeria at the AFCON 2019 in Egypt. Rohr knows why he didn’t play immediately after the World Cup and his move to Middlesbrough played a part in his omission for the last round of games”.
