A late interest from fellow German Bundesliga side Mainz 05 has thrown doubts into the chances of Wolfsburg signing the Nigerian forward from Belgium side Gent.

Wolfsburg were the initial favourite to clinch his signature but the forward is having a second thought about the move, no thanks to the managerial instability that has rocked the club in recent seasons.

Mainz 05 made their interest known to Gent and they are also willing to pay same transfer fee of a little over €10m for the wing forward who missed out on a chance to feature for Nigeria at the World Cup due to injury.

The battle to sign Simon who has just a year left on his contract at Gent is now between the two Bundesliga side despite the long standing interest of Liverpool in acquiring him.
