Gernot Rohr Defends Joel Obi Poor Performance Against England

The poor performance of Torino midfielder Joel Obi in Nigeria’s 1-2 loss against England has drawn criticism from followers of the senior national team of Nigeria.

Obi was way below par for the 45 minutes he was on the pitch and it wasn’t any surprise that the Eagles became a better team after he was substituted with Oghenekaro Etebo taking his spot in the midfield.

Earlier today Obi was named in the Super Eagles final 23 man squad for the World Cup in Russia, a situation which has made many to question his inclusion on the strength of his poor display yesterday.

Rohr speaking in the post match conference shortly after the game said, Obi wasn’t fully fit for the game and that played a part in his not too impressive showing which eventually led to his substitution.

“Joel Obi had some problems to get into his game, he is working very hard because he was injured for a few weeks, so he is not fit 100%. He has to work very much, like many other players he’s a little bit heavy”, Rohr said.

Obi will likely have a chance to redeem himself when the Eagles take on Czech Republic in their final warm up game at their camp in Austria in three days time.
