Head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Eric Chelle has made fixing up the defence of the team his priority when they play in the four team tournament in England alongside Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Ghana.
Chelle isn’t entirely satisfied with the options available to him in the area of center backs and has taken the first step towards addressing it, after seeing how a lack of trusted options cost them two points in the world cup qualifiers game against Zimbabwe which ended in a 1-1 draw.
The coach was short of quality options on the bench and resorted to bringing in a midfielder rather than a defender, as they seek to close the game.
He had Jordan Torunarigha who has just one cap and was a late replacement for Nathan Tella and Igho Ogbu who has not been capped as his only options in center backs and didn’t trust them enough for the level of the game.
Zimbabwe scored late with a tired William Troost-Ekong beaten way too easily with two minutes left to play in the game in Uyo. Chelle is now keen on addressing that area in May when they play in the tournament.
Felix Agu of German side Werder Bremen is a sure candidate for the tournament after holding talks with Chelle. There could also be a return for Auxerre defender Gabriel Osho if he is passed fit before camp opens for the tournament.
On loan Brentford defender Michael Kayode who has been capped by Italy from U16 to U21 level is also due to meet with the coach for talks on switching his nationality to Nigeria.
