The coach of the senior national team of South Africa Hugo Broos has explained the role the Super Eagles of Nigeria will play in helping his team seal a spot at the 2026 World Cup, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
South Africa became the group leaders yesterday after their 2-0 win over Lesotho and Nigeria beating former joint leaders Rwanda by the same scoreline. Benin Republic who were also on the same point with South Africa the last round of games dropped to second after drawing 2-2 with Zimbabwe.
On Tuesday Nigeria who are four points behind South Africa will be at home to Zimbabwe, while South Africa will be away to Benin Republic. The games could see Nigeria narrow the gap further more if Benin Republic and South Africa cancelled out each other.
Broos is however not bothered by that game, insisting that the fact that Super Eagles need to win all their remaining games to stand a chance of making it to the world cup will work in favor of his team, owing to their four points lead over Nigeria.
You know I said a few days ago that there was a team or country in the group who could help us a lot and it is Nigeria. You saw they beat Rwanda today,” Hugo Broos said at the post-match press conference.
“They cannot afford themselves anymore to lose points. Against every team they will do everything to win and at the moment, we have four points ahead of Nigeria.
“It’s up to us to do what we have to do, and when we do that, Nigeria will help us — you’ll see.”
