Former coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr has opened the door for more players of Nigerian origin who are eligible to play for his team Benin Republic to make the switch, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Rohr’s team are in the same world cup qualifiers group with Nigeria, the same way it was in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers where both teams progressed from their group, however only one team will make it from their group in the world cup qualifiers.
When both teams met in the AFCON Qualifiers, the Super Eagles defeated Benin 3-0 in Uyo before playing a 1-1 draw away. In the world cup qualifiers Benin have already earned a 2-1 win over Nigeria and are four points ahead of the Super Eagles.
The difference in quality between the players available has always been a topic to Rohr, who handled Nigeria for almost five years and the surest route to narrowing the gap according to the coach is by targeting players of dual nationality particularly from Nigeria, who share borders with Benin Republic.
Already he has stepped up efforts by investigating the roots of some players who are outside the Super Eagles setup. Presently around seven players of Nigerian origin represents Benin Republic.
