The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has made first contact with Atletico Madrid striker Samuel Omorodion on a possible switch of nationality from Spain to the senior national team of Nigeria, OwnGoalNigeria.com can exclusively reveal.
Omorodion who is on loan to fellow LaLiga side Alaves, a move he made upon his signing from Granada in the summer has found the back to the net nine times this season which is his debut in the top flight.
A full fledged youth international with Spain with 12 appearances for their U19 and U21 teams respectively, Omorodion who is of Nigerian descent is still eligible for the senior national team of Nigeria and the first step towards luring him has been taken by the NFF.
While responding to an email we sent last year, a member of his representative said they are aware of interest from Nigeria and it goes as far as contact between a member of the NFF and the boy’s father. He however said it’s up to the boy to decide.
It was why Omorodion was asked about switching allegiance to Nigeria the last time he was with the U21 team of Spain. “Spain has given me the opportunity and I am very grateful for it. I don’t think about Nigeria. My goal is to debut with the senior side and have my career in Spain”.
His statement means he probably made it known to the NFF via his father where his allegiance lie at least for now, but a switch in the future can’t be ruled out especially if he fails to make the step up to the senior national team of Spain.
