The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is wary of the public backlash that will accompany any decision to name their technical director Austine Eguavoen as the head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria, OwnGoalNigeria.com can exclusively reveal.
Head coach of the Nigerian team Jose Peseiro left his role as coach at the end of the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations following the expiration of his deal as coach of the team, and so far no agreement has been found on extending his deal.
Peseiro has the option of extending the deal after leading the team to the semi final of the AFCON, where they were beaten 1-2 by the host Cote d’Ivoire in the final, an agreement on his wages is delaying all parties involved from making the extension a reality.
Following his exit, the technical director Eguavoen is usually the one to step in as interim coach pending the appointment of a substantive coach for the team , but the coach who filled in the same capacity when the Super Eagles failed to go past the round of 16 at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and also lost the world cup ticket to Ghana is in the dark over the next step of the football house.
We exclusively gathered that the NFF are not in a hurry to make a formal announcement handing him the role in temporary capacity, because of how his last assignment with the team ended and they have stepped up plans to either extend Peseiro’s deal or name a replacement by the end of this month.
They are not under any form of pressure with the team failing to get a game during the upcoming international break following the cancellation of the planned game against world champions Argentina in the United States of America.
