The chances of the senior national team of Nigeria luring highly rated Rennes midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu to play for the senior national team of Nigeria received a boost few days days ago.
Head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Jose Peseiro hasn’t hidden his desire to have players born abroad in his team as he aims to deliver on his promise of winning the next Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
Peseiro sees the midfield area as one of outmost priority, and that is where Lesley who has been earning rave reviews for his performances in Ligue 1 this season comes into the picture. He currently plays for France U19 team but he still eligible for Nigeria through his parents.
He is the nephew to former Nigeria international Onyekachi Apam. Speaking of celebrated Nigerian journalist Oluwashina Okeleji, the 19 year old refuse to rule out the possibility of switching his international allegiance to Nigeria in the nearest future.
“I’m only focused on France and my club right now, but my parents are from Nigeria, so I’m not closing any doors,” he told The Guardian.
“As a young player, I cannot look too far ahead by speaking on the future. I am growing at my club, learning and improving with the France team”, he told the Guardian.
“Right now, there’s no pressure on me to make any decision, but we will see what happens in the future.”
