Head coach of Napoli Luciano Spalletti has explained the thinking behind the decision not to play Victor Osimhen from the start in the Europa League.
Spalletti has so far only played the Nigerian from the start once in Europa League this season but barring suspension he has started all games in the Serie A.
Napoli are the early season pace setters in the League with eight wins out of eight so far and Osimhen has contributed to the count with five goals. Half of the total he scored last season which was the first at the club.
Yesterday he rose from the bench to grab another goal in their 3-0 Europa League win over Legia Warsaw to take his goal count in the tournament to four in three games,
including two in his last two games where he has come in as a substitute.
Spalletti explains the reason behind his role as a substitute in the Europa League prior to yesterday’s game against Legia Warsaw, which saw them pick their first win of the tournament.
“Tomorrow I won’t let him play from the start, but the boy has athletic qualities that allow him to regenerate immediately,” Spalletti told the club’s website.
“Those who will go on the pitch are competitive to play a match of strength and quality. We want to dedicate a good evening to our fans. We also wanted to do it with Spartak, we will try to do it tomorrow with all our commitment.”
