Former captain of the German U20 captain Kevin Akpoguma says he has had talks with Nigeria international forward Alex Iwobi about switching allegiance from Germany to Nigeria.
Akpoguma has been on the radar of coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr who believe the 25 year old can provide enough options in the defence for Nigeria but so far it hasn’t yielded any positive result.
Confirming the approach, Akpoguma said he is happy to be wanted by Nigeria but for now his club career is what he want to focus on as he is at a point where a decision on his future at Hoffenheim is about to be made.
” It’s a nice feeling to be wanted by a top football nation like Nigeria. They have lot of players so wanting me means I am doing something great. For now a decision on my career is what I’m focused on after that we can talk about the choice I will make on my international career”, he said.
As captain of the German U20 team he played against Nigeria at the 2015 U20 World Cup but that hasn’t stopped him from focusing on Germany alone as he has confirmed speaking with Iwobi about playing for Nigeria.
” I have talked with some Nigerian players who are very senior member of the team like Alex Iwobi for instance. The discussion has been about playing for Nigeria and I appreciate their suggestions “.
